Wicker baskets are not just used for summer, they are also a great decorative item. They are used to hold a variety of things such as flowers, books or blankets.

They can be painted in a number of ways but the easiest method is spray painting. It will get between the wicker fibers and give you a nice finish.

How to paint wicker baskets

There’s nothing quite like the look of a pretty basket to add a bit of texture to your decor. Whether it’s for organizing magazines, books or washing clothes, wicker baskets are a great addition to any home.

You can easily paint wicker baskets in your own home, giving them a new lease on life and turning them into functional accessories that fit perfectly with your design style. This project is incredibly simple and can be completed in less than an hour!

First, clean your wicker basket with soap and water to remove any dust or dirt. It’s important to do this before painting, as it will make the paint adhere more effectively and give your basket a smoother finish.

Next, use a dry brush to paint the basket using light layers of the desired color. It’s important to make sure you don’t press hard or brush the paint too deep into the wicker, as this can cause it to look rough and unattractive.

Once you have finished, it’s time to apply a coat of polyurethane sealer. This will help to protect the finish from sun, rain and other environmental elements so that your wicker furniture will continue to look nice for years to come!

When spray painting wicker furniture, it’s best to set up a safe, well-ventilated work area. Put on disposable gloves and a mask to protect your skin from any fine particles that may be released by the spray paint.

For a smooth, even paint finish, it’s important to approach the wicker from different angles. It is also best to use a primer before applying any paint, as this will make it easier to get an even surface.

After the first coat has dried, you can begin to spray it from multiple angles to ensure the wicker is completely covered. You will want to use long, even strokes to cover the wicker in each direction.

If your wicker basket has a handle, you can use this same process to paint the handle as well. Just make sure to keep the can 12 inches away from your basket and move it across the wicker in long, even strokes to achieve an even coverage.

Materials

You can paint on a variety of materials, but it’s not uncommon to find baskets made from rattan or bamboo in your local thrift store. They’re generally inexpensive, reassuringly sturdy and begging to be given new life.

To get a smooth and even finish, first use a spray primer to cover any bumps or scratches. This will help you get an even coverage, and also minimize the amount of paint you need to apply.

If you’re going for a more durable finish, opt for a polyurethane sealant. This type of coating is ideal for outdoor items, as it provides UV protection and repels dirt.

While you’re at it, make sure to pick up a snazzy handle to match your new look. This will not only keep your basket looking great but also protect it from scuffs and scratches.

The most expensive and time consuming part of this project is the actual painting, which can take several hours to complete depending on the size of your basket. In the end, you’ll have a beautiful new piece of furniture to proudly display in your home.

Using the wrong material to coat your basket is an easy way to ruin your masterpiece and may result in a costly restoration. That’s why it’s best to choose the right material for your project.

There are several types of material that can be used to paint a basket, with the most popular being spray paint and chalk or acrylic paint. The best way to decide which product is right for you is to read reviews online or in a store.

Preparation

When you are considering painting your wicker furniture, you must take the necessary steps to ensure a successful outcome. The first step is to clean your wicker. It is a good idea to use a mild soap and water solution, as this will remove any dirt that might affect the new paint.

Next, sand the surface. This will help the new paint adhere better to the wicker. It is also an effective way to prevent any flaking.

You can sand it on your own, or you can use a power sander. This will remove a significant amount of the existing stains and will make the new paint adhere more easily.

It is also a good idea to use masks when working on wicker, as this will protect you from fine dust and mold spores. You can find masks that are specially made for working on wicker.

Once you have sanded the wicker, it is time to start the paint process. You can use either latex or oil based indoor/outdoor paint for your wicker furniture. The oil based paint will stick to your wicker and will provide an excellent finish, but it will dry out more quickly than the latex paint.

The best and most cost efficient way to paint your wicker is by spraying it. It’s a simple process and a cinch to do, and it will give you a smooth, even finish that will last for years. You can do this in the comfort of your own home or, if you’re on a budget, you can hire a professional to do it for you.

Painting

Painting wicker baskets is a simple and effective way to add color, personality and texture. These are great to use as gift baskets, decorative storage or a centerpiece for a table. They can be painted in several ways, including chalk paint and spray paint.

You can also use a dry brush technique to add depth to a natural color. To do this, mix about 75% paint with 25% glazing liquid and apply it to the wicker basket using a brush.

Once the paint has dried completely, you can apply a polyurethane sealant for protection. This will keep the paint from chipping or scratching and is also resistant to water.

Before applying any spray paint, make sure the wicker basket is clean and free of dirt or mold. Dust particles can prevent the spray paint from adhering to the wicker properly and can also lead to the formation of mildew or mold. You should also use a dust mask to avoid breathing fine dirt or mold spores during the process.

Ensure the spray gun is kept a minimum of 12 inches away from the wicker basket, as overspray can cause skin burns. Start by spraying in long even strokes to ensure a smooth finish on the surface of the basket.

After a few light coats, you can begin to apply darker colors to the wicker basket. I used a dark Rust-Oleum oil-rubbed bronze metallic spray paint for this project. It is a great base color that gives the basket a dark look without turning it into a black hole!

I decided to create a multi-color striped pattern for these baskets. Using masking tape, I masked off the bottom section of the basket and sprayed a few light coats of each color to achieve the desired coverage. Then, I taped off the sections above to protect from overspray and sprayed the next color on top of the first.

If you’re using multiple colors, you should apply one color at a time and let it dry completely before applying the next. You can also use painter’s tape to mask off areas you don’t want painted.
