When in Corfu: Where to Go and What to Do

Despite their widespread recognition and high profile among tourists, some European destinations may be underappreciated for reasons other than their inherent attractiveness. Corfu is one of these!

This is especially true given the dispersed nature of the island’s best attractions. It’s a must-see if you ever find yourself in Greece. Corfu has everything you might want in a vacation spot: stunning natural beauty, a storied past and modern comfort. There is something for everyone to do and see on this beautiful Greek island.

You’ll fall in love with Corfu whether you just want to kick back and enjoy the beach or discover everything the island has to offer. In that case, why delay any longer? The time to begin preparations for your trip is now.

1.    Visit the Old Town.

Because of its time under Venetian control, Corfu’s Old Town is filled with stunning examples of Venetian architecture and fortifications. The island’s defenses were strengthened by building multiple forts to prevent possible dangers such as invasions.

The most impressive example is the Old Fortress in Old Town, which stands on a promontory where the original city of Corfu was built during the Byzantine era, and ferry rides to Corfu offer breathtaking views of the sea.

Most of Corfu’s churches, plazas, and monuments were built by the Venetians. The Old Town of Corfu is a major draw for visitors to the island and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the Old Town, there are several fascinating and important historical buildings, including the Venetian Fortress, the Palace of St. George and St. Michael, and the Church of St. Spiridon. The Old Town also features a wide variety of stores, restaurants, and coffeehouses for tourists to enjoy.

2.    Go to the beach.

Glyfada Beach, Agios Georgios Beach, and Palaiokastritsa Beach are just a few of the stunning beaches that can be found on the island of Corfu. Beachgoers can swim, sunbathe, and windsurf at these locations.

In addition, there are many places to eat and drink right on the beach, making it a popular destination for vacationers. Porto Timoni is my favorite beach and stretch of shoreline on the island of Corfu; therefore, if you only have time to see one place on the island, make it Porto Timoni.

A 20-minute walk will take you to the beach, from where you may park your car in the village or outskirts. The beach is fantastic for swimming and snorkeling, but you should come prepared with sunscreen, food, and lots of water.

3.    Take a boat tour.

Taking a boat excursion around the island is one of the greatest ways to explore Corfu. Several companies provide boat cruises of varying durations and destinations. Tourists have their pick of attractions, including the Pontikonisi Island Palace, the Achilleion Palace, and the Venetian Fortress. Taking boat tours can be a very enjoyable and relaxing experience. You get to see the island’s most beautiful views while enjoying the best Greek wine.

4.    Visit Achilleion Palace.

The Achilleion Palace is a must-see for every visitor to Corfu. Empress Elizabeth of Austria commissioned the mansion, which was finished in 1890 and named after the Greek mythological hero Achilles.

The edifice is now accessible to the general public. Inside the palace are many statues and paintings of Achilles, and the grounds, which look out over the Ionian Sea, are quite large. One of the nicest things to do in Corfu if you’re a history fan is to tour this stunning building.

5.    Hike Mount Pantokrator.

Pantokrator, the island’s highest point, provides breathtaking panoramas over the surrounding Ionian Sea and even the Albanian mainland on a clear day. You can drive or hike up to the peak to take in the views and see historic sites like the monastery of Moni Pantokrator and the village of Old Perithia, Corfu’s most significant mountain settlement.

In addition to the several routes that go to the summit of Mount Pantokrator, travelers can also ride a cable car from the town of Kassiopi. So, plan a trip with friends or family members to enjoy the most of Corfu. You will find various pleasurable activities to do as a group. Just make sure to capture those fascinating moments!
