Does your profession require you to earn CEUs each year to maintain your certification? If so, you’ve probably been to some in-person educational classes over the years.
Did you know you have the option of taking your required courses online instead? While in-person learning has its place, here’s why it’s easier to earn CEUs online.
1. Easily retake the exam
Online courses offer a convenience you can’t easily get in person: the ability to retake the exam until you pass. For example, if you’re a respiratory therapist, you can take AARC-approved CEU courses online and retake the quiz as many times as it takes for you to pass.
While some in-person trainings will let you retake the exam, you can’t take it home. You’ll need to retake the exam on the premises, which means coming home late or forfeiting a passing score.
2. You don’t have to leave the house
Leaving the house can be a challenge sometimes, especially when you have family obligations. Trying to arrange a babysitter for your kids can be difficult since the babysitter might cancel at the last minute, leaving you high and dry.
Online CEU courses eliminate all of those issues. When you don’t need to leave the house, you can keep an eye on your kids while you take your courses. Your career won’t be at the mercy of someone else’s ability to commit.
3. You can work around your schedule
The best thing about earning CEUs online is the ability to work around your schedule, whether you have a full-time job, kids, pets, or other obligations. Some courses will need to be taken live, which means you’ll have to attend at a specific time. However, not all online CEUs are earned live.
Even when you are required to complete live CEU courses, the online versions will be easier because you won’t have to travel anywhere to take the course. All you’ll need to do is get everyone in your life to let you have some peace and quiet for the duration of the course.
4. Online CEUs are affordable
If cost is a consideration keeping you from pursuing online CEUs, you might be surprised to learn that it’s not that expensive. You don’t have to pay a huge premium just to get your CEUs online. You might find some high prices, but most companies don’t overcharge for their online education.
5. You can learn in a comfortable environment
Let’s face it – there’s nothing comfortable about sitting in a cold, metal chair for a couple of hours, struggling to keep yourself awake because the room is freezing. When you pursue your continuing education online, you can sit in your own home running the heater, relaxing in your favorite chair or on the couch.
It’s important to be comfortable when you’re learning because discomfort creates a distraction that always keeps your full attention away from the lesson. By making yourself comfortable at home, you’ll get more out of your lessons, which will make it easier for you to learn and pass the exam. This brings up the next point…
6. Online learning has a higher retention rate
When people learn online, they tend to remember more of what they learn. Retention rates for online learning is between 25% to 60% higher than traditional, in-person learning.
While it’s not entirely clear why online learning produces a higher retention rate, it’s presumed to be the result of engaging multi-media content that gets delivered digitally. This kind of material isn’t usually part of an in-person lesson. The drudgery of listening to someone speak for hours makes it’s harder for some people to remember what they’ve learned.
Take your next CEUs online
Next time you’re due for CEUs, try taking them online to see the difference it makes in how you learn and retain the information. You just might be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.
