Colombian government holds ELN, FARC dissidents possibly responsible for attack on president

The mark of a projectile impact is seen on a helicopter that Colombian President Ivan Duque was traveling in, after it suffered an attack during an overflight, according to authorities, in Cucuta, Colombia

Guerrillas from the National Liberation Army (ELN) and members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) could have worked together to carry out an attack on Colombian President Ivan Duque, Defense Minister Diego Molano said on Sunday.

“Information has been received of a possible criminal drug trafficking alliance between the ELN urban front and FARC dissidents,” said the minister.

The attack took place on Friday while Duque was traveling by helicopter near the city of Cucuta. Two firearms and ammunition were recovered from the site.

Molano said that those responsible for the attack, which he described as a “cowardly” and “terrorist” act, would be caught.

He also announced on Saturday that a reward of up to 3 billion pesos (about 800,000 U.S. dollars) was being offered for tips leading to the capture of any perpetrators.
