A lot of my friends have enquired how to make a French toast. Since restaurants are now opening up, I guess it is the right time to write this article today. There are numerous recipes available to choose from. The best thing about making it is that you can complete it in a variety of ways. You can serve it with apple sauce, different syrups, berries, fruits, and lots of other toppings. This way, even if you prepare the same toast, it will taste distinctly due to many toppings that you can use. And the good news is that it is straightforward to make, here’s precisely how to do that.
The central idea of French toast is that it is a simple white bread, dipped in egg custard and either baked or fried. The custard is usually made with milk and eggs and other things, such as vanilla, sugar, cheese, or many others. In this recipe, we will talk primarily about fried French toast.
Many recipes discuss making the toast sweet – with syrups, sugar, berries, apple sauce, dries fruits, etc. One of the methods in this article is for savory toast, while the other one is for the sweet kind.
Here are two simple French Toast recipes for you to help you make it:
French Toast Recipe 1: Sweet
This is the recipe that, I am sure, many have come across, and they all know and like it, with a sweet twist. So for this recipe, you will first need to find a soft white bread. You can use regular white sandwich bread or any other white variety that you have in your kitchen.
Next, you will need to prepare the custard. A custard is nothing more but a combination of eggs and milk. You can also utilize half-n-half or heavy cream to make the custard even creamier.
Now, you can add some other things to the custard. These can be a bit of sugar, honey vanilla. Now your custard is ready. Dip both sides of each bread, slice into the custard, and then fry the bread on a skillet in some olive oil and butter, a few minutes on each side.
Ingredients
- 3 Eggs
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 2 Tbsp. Honey
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 8 Bread Slices
- 1 Tbsp. Sugar
Procedure
- In a large bowl, beat together the milk, eggs, honey, cinnamon, and vanilla.
- Soak the white bread slices in the mixture for about four minutes.
- Heat a lightly oiled frying pan or griddle over medium-high heat. Place the bread slices in the pan for a minute; brown on both sides. Sprinkle with sugar; serve hot.
French Toast Recipe 2: Savory
You can also prepare the toast with a savory twist. The only difference between the above recipe that makes it sweet, and a savory one, is how you spice your egg custard.
Now, to make it savory, use pepper, salt, and herbs (such as parsley or dill) to flavor your custard. Then, make the toast. You won’t want to top it with fruit, as it is not sweet, but it tastes delicious on its own.
