Smackdown: October 9th, 2020
SmackDown Play by Play results and Review by NYK Daily
We start the 2020 WWE Draft, and out comes Stephanie McMahon. The first pick of the first round is Drew McIntyre, and he’s lingering on RAW. With SmackDown’s first pick, they retain Roman Reigns.
The next pick for RAW is them retaining Asuka, and with SmackDown’s following selection, they pick up Seth Rollins. The last pick of the first round is The Hurt Business staying on RAW.
Seth Rollins is interviewed about being drafted to SmackDown, and he says the name of Monday Night Messiah was never as important as the message he tried to send. He says he has new paths to cross, and while he’s sad that he won’t see the Mysterio family implode in person, he’s thankful he doesn’t have to see their messy faces again.
Big E vs. Sheamus – Falls Count Anywhere
Big E and Sheamus take the fight to the parking lot, and it ends with Big E putting Sheamus through a table with the Big Ending in 15 minutes.
Winner: Big E
Match Review: 4/5. WOW! One of the better matches this year. I am all ready for Big E Singles Push. I loved seeing the aggressive Sheamus attitude attacking with Kendo sticks repeatedly. The match’s timing seemed right, and it was fast-paced, with Big E coming out strong.
Big E is met by Kofi and Xavier backstage, and they congratulate him on the match. They say he needs to keep pushing so that one day he can become WWE Champion.
Out comes Jey Uso, and he demands to know the stipulation for their HIAC match. He gets no answer before Paul calls on the titantron and says Jey needs to slow down and not be so ambitious, as should the other guys being drafted from RAW.
A video package exciting Roman plays. Roman says to believe nothing that you hear and half of what you see. But he says Jey needs to believe what he just saw. He wants to help him be better, and he only has to acknowledge him. Roman says now that there will be an I Quit match for the first time inside Hell In a Cell (Is Vince Russo Writing for Smackdown?). It didn’t have to be like this, and he wants to help Jey and that he loves him. But after he says he quits, there will be consequences.
Stephanie McMahon announces New Day against Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro for the tag titles tonight.
In the second round of the draft, RAW takes AJ Styles, Naomi, and Nia Jax/Shayna Baszler, and SmackDown selects Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair.
AJ Styles says that he’s upset that he wasn’t first in the draft, but his future looks phenomenal on RAW.
Matt Riddle and Jeff Hardy vs. The Miz and John Morrison
Riddle pins Miz with the Bro Derek in 6 minutes.
Winners: Jeff Hardy and Matt Riddle
Match Review: 1/5. Why are The Miz and Morrison getting buried? A six-minute match featuring four talented wrestlers seemed awful. WWE must recognize talent and give them enough time to shine.
After the match, Lars Sullivan returns and lays waste to both Riddle and Hardy. The Miz tries to escape, but Lars catches him and sends him into the second turnbuckle and hits the Freak Accident.
Stephanie McMahon says Lars is staying in the RAW draft pool. In the third round of the draft, RAW selects Ricochet, The Miz and John Morrison, and Mandy Rose. SmacKDown picks Jey Uso, Dominik Mysterio, and Rey Mysterio.
Rey Mysterio celebrates with Dominik, and they’re not done with Seth yet.
Bayley (C) vs. Sasha Banks – SmackDown Women’s Championship
Bayley strikes Sasha with a chair and gets disqualified in four minutes.
Winner by DQ: Sasha Banks
Match Review: 1/5. The match was more like an angle to keep the rivalry going. I like how competitive Banks was in the match. Nothing much was interesting except a decent advance in this fascinatingly long rivalry.
After the match, the two get into it, and Banks goes for Bayley’s neck before the two are separated.
Kevin Owens is backstage preparing when Bliss walks up to him and says, “Let Him In.”
Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro vs. The New Day – SmackDown Tag Team Championships
Kofi hits a Trouble in Paradise on Nakamura, and Xavier finishes it with an elbow for the win in 10 minutes.
Winners: The New Day
Match Review: 3.5/5. Good match. I am happy to see Xavier back in the game after over a year.
In the final round of the draft, RAW selects Dana Brooke, the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day, and Angel Garza. SmackDown picks Otis and Big E.
The Fiend vs. Kevin Owens
This is The Fiend’s first Friday night match. We go to break as The Fiend wraps his long entrance.
We are back from the break, and the announcers promote Monday’s RAW Draft. They advertise big matches for next Friday’s SmackDown on FOX season two debut – WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns Vs. Braun Strowman with the title on the line, plus The New Day’s Farewell Match as they face Sheamus, Cesaro, and Shinsuke Nakamura. As far as the match goes, Fiend slams Owens with Uranage while the Mandible is still applied. Fiend holds Owens down with the Claw for the pin to win in 10 minutes.
Winner: The Fiend
Match Review: 3.25/5. Good match with The Fiend coming out strong. What’s next in store for Owens? Heel turn? I hated seeing The Fiend No-Selling all the Kevin Owen moves. This buries the talent, and WWE must change this aspect of Wyatt’s matches. Other than that, the fight was decent.
WWE Smackdown Rating for October 9th, 2020: 7.75/10.
Three Stars of the show.
- BIG E
- Kevin Owens
