NYK Review of WWE NXT: October 7, 2020

WWE NXT: October 7, 2020

Tommaso Ciampa Vs. Kushida

Much has been made of Kushida’s newfound, more unruly demeanor, but he faced a tricky test against one of the most wicked Superstars in NXT history. The match with Tommaso Ciampa was every bit as hard-hitting as one would imagine. Velveteen Dream entered and cut their battle short, though, trying to take out Kushida, the man who subdued him Sunday at NXT TakeOver 31. However, he accidentally struck Ciampa instead, ending the match by disqualification.

Winner: Tommaso Ciampa via disqualification in 14:34

Match Review: 3.5/5. Good Match. Ciampa is back at his very best. Kushida seems promising, as well. I wanted a better end to the match, though.

NXT’s resident Time Splitter ended up getting the better of Dream yet again, slapping him on the outside of the ring until he resigned. Meanwhile, Ciampa seemed exasperated with the result.

Killian Dain & Drake Maverick Vs. Ever-Rise

Drake Maverick and Killian Dainare anything but a well-oiled machine, though they still found a way to chase victory over Ever-Rise. Drake spent much of the match being beaten down by the much more experienced tag team of Matt Martel and Chase Parker until Dain powerbombed his partner onto Parker, leaving Maverick in place for the pinfall.

Winners: Drake Maverick and Kililan Dain in 4:02

Match Review: 2/5. Average match. WWE, please make the NXT tag team division great again.

Dain still wasn’t quite ready to feast with Maverick afterward, instead of leveling him with another post-match haymaker. But The Beast of Belfast did show some sympathy this time, slinging Drake over his shoulder before going to the backstage area.

Austin Theory Vs. Leon Ruff; Dexter Lumis Vs. Austin Theory

Austin Theory is making a practice of biting off more than he can chew. “All Day” disposed of Leon Ruff in short order before issuing another open challenge, only to find the returning Dexter Lumis echoing the call. Still, Theory found a way to grab control before getting himself in a struggle with too much grandstanding, allowing Lumis to plant him with a Uranage eventually and put him out with Silence.

Winner: Dexter Lumis in 12:09

Match Review: 2.75/5. WWE is trying to push Lumis.

Afterward, Lumis was attacked by Cameron Grimes, who declared he was getting retribution for Lumis not answering him backstage last week.

Ridge Holland Vs. Danny Burch

Ridge Holland impressed against a fellow Brit in Danny Burch, emerging victorious after a quick but hard-hitting affair. Fisticuffs persisted after the bell with Burch’s tag team partner Oney Lorcan joining the fray to present backup for his fellow Brit-Am Brawler, getting his taste of a “proper scrap” with Holland for good measure.

Winner: Ridge Holland in 2:05

Match Review: 1/5. Squash.

Shotzi Blackheart def. Xia Li

Shotzi Blackheart came away with another victory, as the host of the forthcoming NXT Halloween Havoc put Xia Li away after hitting a top-rope senton. Afterward, Boa offered Li an envelope, and Li seemed as confused as the NXT Universe likely was.

Winner: Shotzi Blackheart in 1:47

Match Review: 0.5/5. Another shot match. A decisive victory for Shotzi Blackheart again.

Ember Moon & Rhea Ripley Vs. Dakota Kai & Raquel González

Ember Moon may not have fought for more than a year, but you’d never know it from watching her match tonight in her official return to the black-and-gold brand. She joined forces with Rhea Ripley to forge a dream team of sorts, albeit one with contending interests as they both eye Io Shirai’s NXT Women’s Championship. But on this night, they put their differences aside, operating seamlessly as a unit at various junctures.

Ripley and Raquel González fought outside before tumbling over the broadcast table, occupying Dakota Kai’s attention instantly. Moon took advantage, hitting a picture-perfect Eclipse for the win.

Winners: Ember Moon and Rhea Ripley in 11:51.

Match Review: 3.5/5. Welcome home, Ember Moon. I am excited to see Ember Moon in NXT. She’s one of the best in the ring. It was a fitting main event after a couple of squash matches.

WWE NXT Rating for October 7, 2020: 7.5/10
