Life Lessons Learned in My 50’s that I Wish I Could Tell My 20-Year-Old Self

There is a proverb in Japan: time flies like an arrow. This proverb is one of the most factual statements anyone will ever hear. I am in my 50s now, but I can recollect my 20s as if it was just yesterday.

Now that I am much older, experienced, and mature, there are many lessons that I wish I could tell myself when I was in my 20s. In life, learning truly never ends and looking back now, there is a lot more insight for me regarding my actions. These are the life lessons I will tell my younger self:

Keep Your Dreams Alive

When you are in your 20s, it is easy to get intimidated by your dreams or even others who will do anything to discourage you. You must always know and remind yourself that your goals are very valid, and nothing should distract you from achieving them.

When one is in their 20s, it is easy to develop beautiful dreams and ambitions, but not everyone can follow up and remain consistent. Tell yourself that your goals are on point, and you should not relent.

Put Yourself First

You will be in a relationship at a tender age, and you will be so dedicated to every other person except yourself. You are most likely to be influenced by brands, friends and you may even try to blend in. Since you are so young, naïve, and inexperienced at such an age, you will fail to put yourself first. Some even end up losing themselves in the process.

While it is right for you to have romantic relationships as a young lady, keep friends and do other things, you must always know that you should be a priority. You should exercise some degree of selfishness, let your interests come first, and later realize that there is nothing terrible in making your interests a major priority.

Learn Financial Literacy

This is one of the most important lessons you are going to focus on. It would help if you did everything possible to make sure that you learn everything about financial literacy. Whatever it is that you do in life, money will be a recurring and all-important factor. You must learn how to make your own money, invest, how taxes work and how you get to save.

You must not just learn financial literacy, you must also start practicing everything you have learned. Do not make the mistake of becoming an economic illiterate. Attend courses on financial literacy and start building up for your retirement.

Travel the World

Do not remain in one place in your 20s because you will not have that opportunity a second time. Organize and go on tours and voyages to as many places as possible. By traveling, you get to learn a lot and appreciate the complexity of the world we live in. You can travel on your own or you can go with tour groups. In your 20s, you still have all the energy and vibrancy to travel, so you should make the very best of it.

This is probably the only phase of your life when as a lady, you do not have to worry about children or marriage so you can concentrate on enjoying your travel escapades.

Learn More About Yourself

The phase is also one in which you can learn a lot about yourself as a person. You get to examine and explore your psyche while developing a deep comprehension of your mindset. This will help you reshape your thoughts and tell you what you want and what is the best for you.

As a young lady in your 20s, you will experience a lot but do not despair when the challenges come. Always maintain a positive and optimistic view of life. Whatever you are facing, always motivate and encourage yourself that it is a phase of life and you will triumph and succeed. As I look back now, I did things in my 20s that I am very proud of, and there is nothing for me to regret – I want you to have a similar or even better mindset. In all you do, I wish you nothing but the very best.
