A Houston police officer died on Tuesday after being shot while another officer who responded to the same incident was being treated for injuries in the hospital, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement.
“Our hearts are with the family of Houston Police Sgt. Harold Preston who was shot and killed in the line of duty this morning,” Abbott said on Twitter. “This tragic loss is a grave reminder of the dangers our brave law enforcement officers face while keeping our communities safe.”
Abbott said Courtney Waller, a police officer who was also shot, was recovering in the hospital.
A suspect in the shooting was taken into custody earlier on Tuesday, police spokeswoman Jodi Silva. The suspect suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital.
The Houston Police Department had dispatched a SWAT team to deal with a “possible barricaded suspect”, according to an earlier tweet by the department.
