Do you want to try horse riding for the first time? Riding a horse is an exciting, fun and hugely beneficial activity to try.

If it’s your first time in the saddle, you might not know what to wear. But don’t worry. Keep reading to find out what to wear horseback riding.

A Long Pair of Pants

Long pants will stop your thighs from chaffing on the saddle or the side of the horse. Try to make sure that they have a little bit of stretch to them. That way, they’ll be more comfortable while you’re sitting and riding, and won’t stop you from any specific movements.

It’s best to wear pants that fit well. If they’re too loose or baggy, they may get caught on something as you’re riding. This could cause you an injury and may lead to you falling from your horse.

Also, try to wear pants that have a bit of texture. You don’t want them to be too slippery or shiny, otherwise, it can be difficult to stay stable in the saddle.

Unless you’re planning to ride often, don’t worry about purchasing specific riding pants. It will be fine to use clothing that you already have in your closet.

A Comfortable Top

Depending on the weather, you might choose to wear a tank top, t-shirt or long-sleeved top. If you’re riding on a trail with a lot of brambles or branches, a long-sleeved top may give you added protection and prevent any scratches or injuries.

You don’t want to wear a top that’s too tight. If you do, you may feel uncomfortable while you ride. On the other hand, try not to wear an excessively loose top, or it can get caught and cause you to fall.

If you’d like to, you can choose to wear a top that is brightly colored. This will make you more visible while you’re riding. But don’t worry about this too much; whoever you’re riding with will make sure that you are safe.

A Waterproof Jacket

If the weather is particularly wet or cold, it’s best to wear a jacket that will keep you dry and warm. This will make your ride more comfortable and enjoyable.

If possible, it’s best to avoid wearing a coat that’s too bulky. Otherwise, it could restrict your movements.

Riding Boots

It is important to wear the right boots for riding. The height of the boot supports your ankle while you’re riding. A small heel helps your foot to stay in the stirrup.

If you’re only going to take a couple of lessons at most, you can get away with wearing sneakers.

You don’t want to wear anything too bulky or with too much grip. These types of shoes can make it difficult to get your foot into the stirrup.

A Pair of Gloves

If it is particularly cold outside, wearing gloves can be a good idea. It can be difficult and unpleasant to try to ride when your hands are cold.

Gloves can also be helpful if you have sensitive hands that may be irritated by holding the reins.

Apply Sunscreen

If you’re riding outside, don’t forget to wear sunscreen. This will keep your skin protected from the sun’s rays.

Even if it’s not particularly bright outside, you should still apply sunscreen. The sun’s UV rays can still cause damage on an overcast day.
