Pregnancy and birth: Baby’s due date!

Pregnancy is a very important time for parents and the baby. Usually only finds out about the pregnancy parents want to find out the exact date of birth of a baby. It is often difficult for doctors to determine the exact time.

When the pregnancy continues 40 weeks it is called a full-term pregnancy. If the baby is born before 37 weeks it is considered to be a preterm birth. Post-term – prolonged or overdue pregnancy continues for longer than 42 weeks.  Statistics say that about 60 out of 100 women give birth on or before their given due date.

How is the baby’s due date calculated?

It is important to know approximately when a baby will be born for several reasons: the preparation and anticipation of the mother becomes calmer, determining when maternity leave starts and deciding whether to induce labor or do additional examinations.

There are two main ways to estimate how far along a pregnancy is: calculating the due date based on the last menstrual period and trying to determine the baby’s age by doing ultrasound scans.

Pregnancy due date calculator

The duration of pregnancy should be 40 weeks, but in most cases the birth occurs earlier or later. Using pregnancy due date calculator, you can calculate the date that the baby will be born, but, as I mentioned earlier, there is no need for full blindly trust. To get the most accurate data a woman should remember on her last day of menstruation. This day is the first day of pregnancy.

Due to frequent mistakes in estimating when pregnancy started, doctors and midwives sometimes adjust due dates that were calculated in this way – for instance, based on the size of the child in an ultrasound scan during early pregnancy.

Ultrasound for calculating the due date

Ultrasound can help doctors to see what is happening inside the womb and how big the baby is. The size of the baby can be used to estimate how old the baby is and tell us how many weeks the woman has been pregnant. Ultrasound is used by sound waves that bounce off the baby’s body and turned into an image.

The suggested time for an ultrasound is between 8 and 12 weeks because the babies in the first trimester (12 weeks) are very similar in size. If the estimated due date based on the ultrasound scan is very different to the due date calculated based on your last period, your doctor or midwife can adjust your due date accordingly.

In conclusion, it is very important for a woman to follow her menstrual cycles when planning a baby. This will make it easier to determine the date of birth. Knowing the date allows you to plan everything and get emotional. Once again I want to remind you that very rarely does the pregnancy lasts as long as it is written in the books. All women are very different and everyone has to realize that things are not always going as planned.
